A responsible company has "rights and duties" with regard to its employees:
• The right to ask them to commit to the company's Sustainable Development approach: this is the case when we ask people, whenever possible, to use double-sided printing 1 .
• The duty to contribute to the professional development of as many people as possible: this is why staff meetings are held every three months, and the first employee-satisfaction survey was developed for Manosque/Paris and Geneva in 2006.

Our most recent actions
In 2008, we asked people working at the head office to go green!
• We now use recycled paper in our office, and 50% of our office stationery is labeled "green".
• Waste is sorted throughout the company, in offices and break rooms.
• Disposable plastic cups 2 are a thing of the past: long life mugs, glasses and anything else reusable that you can drink from!
• All of these actions have reduced the number of plastic cups used each month by thousands!

In 2009, we tried to make the working atmosphere better. First, we organized gymnastic courses twice a week in Manosque, and Yoga sessions in Paris. An itinerant market is now available at the Manosque factory, proposing organic products. We attended the opening of an inter-firms nursery which welcomes 10 children of the L'OCCITANE staff.
We can also talk about the lunches we organize at the beginning of every season. These pleasant moments take place outside the factory, and people, more than 100 persons, usually share a good local meal in a huge picnic atmosphere.

What encouraged us to promote carpooling at the Manosque site and to set up a company transportation system for some of the factory employees?

As part of the company transportation plan, L’OCCITANE has arranged for a bus to go between Forcalquier and Manosque, to transport workers on the continuous 8-hour shift schedule. Over 60 employees from the three shift teams use this bus. The fact that L'OCCITANE set up this transportation plan prompted the regional council to extend the interurban line as far as L’OCCITANE, thus opening up the industrial zone.
To reduce our employees’ carbon footprint, we also revised the company car guidelines to focus on more ecological vehicles and encourage greener driving practices. We include low-CO2 vehicles in the list of available vehicles. Next, this list is sent to employees who are entitled to a company car. Since April 2010, a new hybrid company car is now parked at the factory site.

L’OCCITANE: a responsible employer
L’OCCITANE has always been committed to employing disabled workers 4.

In 2008, nine people with poor recruitment prospects were recruited with a 1-year contract in the production workshops, to be trained as packaging operators. Six of them were disabled workers, and they all received their diploma.
To make it easier for those who are registered disabled to work within the company, their workstations have been (or are being) adapted to meet their needs, and management allows five extra half days of leave for specialist consultations for those concerned.
Our disabled employee policy is extended today through, for example, the subcontracting works we give to ESATs 5 which provide work to people with severe disabilities.

What’s to come?
We are now looking for how to implicate more people within our convivial actions. To help us, we’ll probably make the second employee-satisfaction survey.
We are also thinking about the ways to improve the working conditions in order to better conciliate private life with professional life. For example, in 2010 we project to fit out the spaces of break to make them more attractive and friendlier.
Double-sided printing 1 :
Photo-copiers/printers are programmed to automatically print double-sided.
Plastic cups 2 :
In 2008: Water dispensers are available for head office employees, but without the accompanying plastic cups. In parallel, over 1000 cups made from recycled plastic were handed out at the three L'OCCITANE sites: Paris, Manosque and Geneva. The coffee machines in the factory also now offer a "use-your-own-cup" option.
Carpooling 3 :
In 2008: The company launched a campaign to raise awareness of carpooling. There are now specific parking spaces reserved for carpoolers, who are identified by stickers available from the Manosque site. At present, over 100 people use the carpooling system at L'OCCITANE, and employees can access a file to put potential carpoolers in touch with each other.

Disabled workers 4 :
To ensure that professional opportunities at the company are open to disabled people, we regularly post ads on specialized websites. Recruitment managers have also been trained in recruiting disabled workers.
ESAT 5 :
"ESAT" centers are occupational day centers that give work to disabled people who could not work in an ordinary environment.
